PROPOSAL

For my final project, at first I wanted to do something that represents the difference between young memories from childhood and older memories from early adult life, but after doing the research project I realized that all memories fade, except the essential ones in our life. There isn't much of a thread in my pictures except for the theme of self discovery. I feel we're always discovering things about ourselves, that everyone starts out as a blank canvas and paint is slowly added to our canvas throughout our lives until the end when we've finished our masterpiece. I want to show both self discovery and memories fading in my piece. To do that, I was intrigued by what I ended up doing for my research portion of this project with that photo of Boltanski - I took his photo and tore up the edges, then filled a glass dish with water and put the pieces of the photo in the water. Some pieces sank, some floated, and they all moved in their own way when the dish was spun. What I want to do with my 100 photos is to take a variety of glass containers, fill them with water and other transparent liquids like vegetable oil, juice, vinegar, and tear up my some of my images, put them in the liquids, and make them interactive - some will spin, some will have spoons you can stir them with, that sort of thing. My text will have it's own dish to float around in, none of it will be torn up though, it'll all float together. That's my idea.

  1. Is the jar a symbolization of preserving thing? Because pickled vegetables are preserved over a long period of time. How happy were you overall about this semester. Will the overall feel of this semester determine how successful your project will turn out?

  2. Are you trying to convey preserving a memory ? And do you tend on using all of your 100 day photos or ones that have more connection to you overall. But its a great idea to represent them in.

  3. are you using random photos or are you picking certain ones for a reason? what are you trying to say about your memories? maybe come up with what exactly you want to say before you pick the photos you use and jars and so on, so that they all help convey your idea

  4. Will all the jars be identical or will they be different to show the difference in memories? Will the text be patched up with it's respective picture?

    1. They're going to be different containers - jars, bowls, glasses. The text will all be in one separate container away from the pictures.

  5. Why is the text not broken up? If you want to show how memories can be forgotten wouldn't the text be forgotten as well?

    1. The text isn't broken up because it's all going to be in one small container together and the clumping of all the words will make it hard to read them all and make them all blend together anyways.

  6. How will you decide which photographs will be put in which liquids, have you considered placing some photographs in more acidic, or even chemical based liquids to show a faster fading memory? I think experimentation will be key to this artwork, testing how photographs react with the liquids, and the message it conveys.

    1. I agree, there will definitely be a lot of experimentation. How I associate with each photo/memory will decide which liquids the photos will go into. For instance, if a photo reminds of something I regret and that really weighed me down, that photo can go into an oil. If a photo reminds me of something vain or fake, it will go into a juice. The memories I cherish and remember the most will float at the top of the liquids in the containers, seeing as they're the memories I remember the most and want to hold on to and remember.

  7. I think there should be more interaction between the text and the photos. By segregating the text from the photos you lose the connection between the two parts. I think that you should some how have the text attached to the inside of the glass containers facing out so you can establish a relationship between photo and text. Also, i think the text should be worn like the photos.

    1. The way I did the text made the text all connect to each other and not necessarily all the photos. I'd rather keep all the text together because of this and separated from the photos, but I do like the idea of having some of the text attached to the glass containers facing out so the most important pieces of text can be read clearly. May I ask why you think the text should be worn as well?

  8. I was wondering the same thing as Cassie: will there be reasoning behind which photos get placed in which liquids? Certain liquids will preserve the photos longer, so I am curious as to whether you will place memories you wish to keep for a longer period of time in certain liquids. Will each photo have its own jar, or will your torn up photograph fragments be mixed together?

    1. I'll refer you to my reply to Cassie for the first part. As for the second part of your comment, I plan on having multiple photos in each container, photos that relate to each other will have their own container, but they'll all be together. The most prominent photos - the ones I remember and cherish the most - Will be the most put together and will float at the top of the liquids in the containers.

  9. Love your idea. I like that you did a lot research for it, but I think that you might need to think more about your visual imagery. How are you separating the images into the different jars and if so why where.
